Fall time around SPL
Service Activities
A number of activities which utilize the Storm Peak Lab can be described as service to the community, agencies or the public. Aside from the use of the weather station data by the schools, the real-time meteorological parameters are accessed via modem by the Steamboat Springs Ski and Resort Corporation (SSRC) for use in lift operations (particularlyduring high winds and other severe weather), snow making operations and avalanche control. In addition, the SSRC holds an annual "Weather Summit" conference of broadcast and cable TV meteorologists, in which one part of the conference program is a visit to the SPL where scientific presentations and interviews are given to the meteorologists for later airing in their home markets.
The U.S. Forest Service maintains a set of 35mm still cameras for long term visibility monitoring in the local region, specifically for two Class 1 wilderness areas within sight of SPL. It is anticipated that the SPL weather station data may also be used by National Weather Service forecast offices within the region for model verification and nowcasting. Additional public users of SPL have included balloon pilots, local citizens with an interest in meteorology and climate, and test engineers working with Global Positioning System (GPS) instrumentation.
